The difference between the compulsory deductible and the voluntary deductible
Besides the compulsory deductible, you can opt to have a voluntary deductible. But what exactly is the difference between the compulsory deductible and the voluntary deductible?
Compulsory deductible
The deductible is the amount you must pay yourself before your health insurance starts to reimburse you for healthcare you have received. You will have to pay the deductible if you are over 18 years of age and need healthcare covered by the general insurance policy. The compulsory deductible for 2025 is €385 and it is determined by the government.
Voluntary deductible
On top of the compulsory deductible, you can also opt to have a voluntary deductible. If you have the Zorg-op-maatpolis or Zorgvariatiepolis you can choose a €100, €200, €300, €400 of €500 voluntary deductible. The higher the voluntary deductible you choose, the lower your premium will be. If yours is the Zorgbewustpolis, you can only choose a voluntary deductible of €500.
